More than 90 students from primary schools in Karratha and surrounds spent the last day of Term 1 representing their schools in a round-robin football competition at Baynton West oval.

Teams from Baynton West, Tambrey, Millars Well, Pegs Creek and Wickham primary schools fought it out across the day for the coveted Docker Cup and Shield.

In the end Baynton West Primary School took out top honours, with both the boys' and girls' teams finishing the competition undefeated.

Ky Hayes was Baynton West's boys' player of the tournament with his deft ruckwork and pack marking, while for Baynton West girls' Paige Benjamin showed superb skill at full-forward kicking six goals in one game.

Baynton West health and physical education co-ordinator Courtney Jones said he was impressed by the skill and sportsmanship on display throughout the competition.

"Children from Baynton West PS showed their fantastic hospitality by walking around with plates of oranges, drinks and sunscreen for all plus a sprinkler hung up in a tree proved to be a popular cool-down station in between games," he said.

"Year 12 students from Karratha Senior High School donated their time to be umpires and scorers for the day and were fair and consistent."

"A special mention must go to Wickham Primary School who travelled a long distance to be a part of the event and in particular their girls who went within a few straight kicks of winning the cup even though they had only 10 players."
