City of Joondalup council to consider Craigie ‘liveable housing’ development for people with disabilities

The City of Joondalup will vote whether to approve a liveable housing development in Craigie intended to accommodate people with disabilities. Approval is to be decided at the city’s next council meeting on September 25 to build the development on vacant land previously occupied by the former Craigie High School, which was closed in 2003 and demolished in 2011. The development plans on the 4500sqm block consists of nine grouped dwellings intended to be developed for people with disabilities, however the report notes that the development is not proposed to be restricted to dependent persons only. The size of the dwellings vary, with three two-bedroom homes, five three-bedroom dwellings and one four-bedroom home. A communal garden and open space are also included in the Revitalise Circuit development. The report noted the main difficulty of the development being the land’s 3.6m slope, which will require a retaining wall and site works in the centre of the block. “The natural ground level of the subject site rises approximately 3.6 metres west to east and therefore site works are proposed to facilitate the development,” the report said. City officers have recommended its approval and also noted the significant landscaping plans for the site and outdoor space for the residents, which far exceeds minimum requirements. The development proposal was submitted by Building Development Group on behalf of the owner Liber Victus Pty Ltd.
