Seafood origin to be labelled on all Australian restaurant, cafe and club menus

Australians will soon be able to determine if they are eating WA’s lobster with the origin of seafood to be labelled on menus. The move could be good news for WA, with the change expected to lead to a boost in the consumption of local seafood. Consumer Affairs ministers met on Friday to lock in the new labelling rule, which will come into effect Australia-wide in 2025. Currently, more than 60 per cent of seafood purchased by Australians is imported, with that figure increasing every year. The Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative sells one million crayfish across the nation every year — but that number is dwarfed by the nine million they export overseas, which makes them Australia’s biggest lobster exporter. Assistant Trade and Manufacturing Minister Tim Ayres said the fishing and seafood industry had been fighting for the reforms for more than 15 years. “A lack of labelling laws has made it easy to pass off seafood as local. Seafood is a key part of an iconic Australian summer — from prawns at Christmas to battered fish on the beach,” Senator Ayres said. “We want to help make sure that this seafood is as Australian as the tradition it comes from.” The seafood industry employs 17,000 Australians with almost all being in regional areas on trawlers or in processing and wholesale. Seafood Industry Australia chief executive Veronica Papacosta said Australians should have the right to make informed choices about the food they buy and consume. “(It) will enhance consumer awareness, support the Australian seafood industry, create jobs, and have positive economic impacts, as evidenced by a cost-benefit analysis conducted on behalf of the Australian Government,” she said. “With 62 per cent of seafood consumed in Australia being imported, it is imperative that consumers dining out have access to clear and accurate information about the origin of the seafood they are served. This information is critical for supply chain transparency.”
