‘Her body wanted to die’: Bubba’s miracle survival

Doctors told Bubba’s parents that her body wanted to die. After 12 major surgeries, the removal of her right lung and 112 long days in hospital, her survival is nothing short of a miracle.

Bubba Kaio Rerekura is a five-year-old force; a “warrior princess” who has a ferocious right kick in mixed martial arts — using a leg almost lost to sepsis — and who can swim like a fish with just one lung.

That Bubba is even here at all, to boss her four sisters around, hug her parents and apply a coat of lip gloss, flick back her hair and take on the world, is more than a miracle.

It is a testament to compassionate, brilliant and innovative medical teams who never stopped looking for answers as Bubba’s tiny body was ravaged by a deadly infection, to her family’s unwavering faith, and to community.

Quick little overnight recap

The Snooze Slumber Party has just wrapped up with a very early slice of celebratory cake in bed - and the obligatory presentation of a giant cheque.

Telethon’s overnight skit favourites Famous Sharron and Ben O’Shea each produced a cake to celebrate five years of the slumber party, now a staple of Telethon’s overnight programming.

Lying on the bed with Chad Rankin from Snooze, O’Shea shared that he had baked a cake himself to mark the milestone of the fifth annual slumber party.

And his offering had all the hallmarks of a dad’s homemade treat, an odd-shaped, roundish treasure loosely covered in icing and lollies.

Famous Sharron then shared that she too had organised a cake for the moment - producing a perfectly designed, bed-shaped baked beauty of a treat.

Snooze’s contribution to Telethon this year was $50,000
