Students at St Joseph’s Primary School have celebrated NAIDOC Week by building tapping sticks, painting faces, decorating sticks with yarn, and painting rocks and bark.
The whole school community was invited to a big celebration last Friday where a smoking ceremony and traditional dances were performed.
Aboriginal teacher assistant Ashlee Winner said classes worked on activities throughout the week before coming together for the big celebration on Friday.
“It really shows that you can celebrate all different cultures together,” she said.
“Our First Nation kids love telling their classmates all about NAIDOC and what it means to them, then our non-First Nations kids join in the conversation — it’s beautiful to see.”
