The heavens have opened up and Australia Day events cancelled in Karratha as Cyclone Riley passes by off the Pilbara coast.

Karratha received 17mm of rain overnight and wind gusts of up to 67kmh. It is first decent rain event of what has so far been a dry wet season.

Riley is currently sitting about 430 kilometres north of Karratha as a category two system.

It is not expected to make landfall, however a blue alert is currently in place for communities between Whim Creek and Onslow.

A watch zone extends to Exmouth and the North West Cape as the cyclone continues to track west.

The City of Karratha has cancelled Australia Day fireworks due to forecasted strong winds in the area. The citizenship ceremony will still go ahead as planned.

In Port Hedland, celebrations have been moved to Wanangkura Stadium and fireworks were still scheduled to go ahead as of last night.
