Tropical Cyclone Riley has intensified to a category two system overnight as it heads west off the Kimberley coast.

A blue alert issued for communities between Whim Creek and Onslow by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services remains in place this morning, though the cyclone continues to track further offshore.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted the cyclone will continue to move westwards parallel to the Pilbara coast today and intensify to a category three system tonight.

It will only pose a risk to those in the watch area if it takes a more southerly track.

Karratha had a brief period of rain yesterday, and squally thunderstorms may occur today ahead of the system along the Pilbara coast.

Those storms could continue throughout the Australia Day weekend between Port Hedland and Exmouth.
