Karratha boxer Derek Murtagh is travelling to Perth to take part in his first amateur fight in seven years.

Murtagh will be fighting in the under 75kg at The Embassy in Perth on Saturday night.

He has been training at the Raiders Boxing Club in Karratha with Shane McDonald.

“I can’t wait for it,” Murtagh said.

“I’ve been training hard now for the past six months.”

Murtagh said he had boxed as a child and was now trying to get back into the sport.

“Shane has brought my fitness on no end … he has gotten my interest up to where it needs to be,” he said.

The Karratha boxer has been training about five or six days every week and recently returned from Melbourne after an intense week-long training camp.

Murtagh and McDonald are both confident of victory on Saturday night. “I should win, I hope to win (and) I am confident,” Murtagh said.

McDonald said he was 90 per cent sure Murtagh would win Saturday’s fight.

Murtagh said he was hoping to repay the faith and effort his trainer had put into him.

“He (McDonald) has put a lot of good work into the club so hopefully we repay him,” he said.
