Two Pilbara youth groups have been named finalists for a young achiever award, with the winner set to be announced next month.

Robe River Kuruma Youth Council and Tom Price Emergency Services Cadet Corps were listed as finalists in the WA Young Achiever Awards, which aim to recognise the positive achievements of young people in WA.

Robe River Kuruma Youth Council was named in the Woolworths Youth Group Achievement Award category, with chairwoman Emma Jean Evans saying the group was excited to be nominated.

“Everyone was really proud. Our elders are really, really happy we achieved something like that,” she said.

“It’s a great opportunity for us as well.”

“It’s a really big deal for us to be nominated and we are really excited to participate.

“To do something like this, it helps them to realise that you can achieve anything and just don’t be afraid, take risks, everyone makes mistakes and you learn from them.”

Tom Price Emergency Services Cadet Corps were finalists in the Woolworths Youth Group Achievement Award and the Awards Australia Regional Service Award categories.

Tom Price cadet unit leader Nicole Kelly said the cadets were looking forward to the presentations in Perth.

“It’s always an honour to be nominated and for the cadet unit to have those nominations really sets the kids in a really positive light,” she said.

“It showcases what these kids can do.

“For kids, I think it’s really important, so they feel valued as well.”

The awards presentation will take place on October 17 in Perth.
