Peace and harmony

An annual concert to celebrate peace, social harmony, and creativity is set to be music to the ears of Roebourne.

The third consecutive Songs for Peace concert, run by the charity Big hART, to celebrate music, peace and social harmony in the town, will culminate in a performance by Broome artist Naomi Pigram along with other locals.

A series of workshops will be held for young people, community members and the elderly, with music gatherings at the John Pat Peace Place at sunset.

There will also be songwriting workshops at Roebourne Regional Prison with a focus on language and new music genres, and movement workshops for women inmates.

Broome singer-songwriter Naomi Pigram performed at the concert last year and said she wanted to come back.

“I was only here for a week, and being able to share the stories and learning the people’s music here, and what they had written was an incredible experience,” she said.

“The people involved in creating the content have such important stories to tell, and when you have the ability to tell a story, it initiates a healing process.”

Ms Pigram has also been running workshops, including at Roebourne Prison.

The Songs for Peace concert will be held on September 19 to coincide with the International Day of Peace.
