Heat on as budding chefs vie for title

The catering stakes were raised at the latest Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry networking event when a team of budding young chefs took on the challenge of competing to be crowned Pilbara’s own MasterChef.

About 30 Year 11 and 12 Karratha Senior High School students studying for a Certificate II in hospitality cooked for businesspeople at the May Business After Hours event, for which the school library was transformed into a restaurant.

An appreciative crowd voted for their favourite dishes and, while the large spread of canapes and desserts didn’t make it an easy choice, they eventually awarded Year 12’s Rebekah Adamson and Year 11 trio Jada-Lily Corby, Mackenzie Cooke and Alyssa Dyson the coveted Golden Spoon first prize.

Karratha Senior High School principal Jennifer McMahon said the school had wanted to run a BAH MasterChef for some time as a way to give hospitality students real-world experience and thank the local business community for its support. She said the project represented three weeks of work for students, guided by local chef Nickie Ralph.
