Fashion for a worthy cause

A group of Karratha residents and businesses have joined forces to put on the Frocks n Fashion for Famine event.

On Friday, June 16 at the Karratha Leisureplex, residents are encouraged to get the girls together for what is promised to be a stellar night of fashion, food, drinks and fundraising.

Proceeds from the event will go to UNICEF’s emergency appeal to raise money for the South Sudan children’s food crisis.

Chief organiser Candace Leech said she was motivated to raise money for the cause after reading a link posted on Facebook by a friend working in Africa which struck a chord.

“Because I’m a mum and babies weren’t even getting any food, even from their mums, it affected me a lot,” she said.

The South Sudan famine started earlier this year after years of war and drought, causing instability in the country.

It has been estimated to have affected almost 5 million people — almost half of South Sudan’s population.

“I knew I couldn’t do anything on my own so that’s when I got a group of people together and asked ‘What can we do’,” Ms Leech said.

“Kresta (of Hola Pretty) had done a fashion show before previously … and it was quite successful so I thought I wanted to do something like that involving women.”

The event is open to men and women and will feature a runway show displaying clothes from local fashion boutiques Hola Pretty and Labels on Loan, and there will be food by Empire 6714 and entertainment by DJ Panda.

Hola Pretty is an online boutique clothing store founded by Karratha’s Kresta Scott, and it stocks a range of mainly Australian quality labels, including Asilio, Keepsake the Label, We Are Kindred, Mossman, and Imonni.

Labels on Loan, founded by Tiffiny Turner, is a retail service allowing women to hire high-fashion clothing by Australian and international labels for special events.

Tickets to the event are $70 each, include a glass of champagne on arrival, and are available from trybooking. com/PTKS.
