Three Pilbara organisations have been recognised at an awards ceremony for their efforts to support volunteer emergency service members in the workforce.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services held the Volunteer Employer Recognition Awards night recently to acknowledge the effort made by businesses to allow volunteers to attend emergency incidents and training during work hours.

The Shire of Exmouth and City of Karratha both won awards for their efforts, while Tom Price Senior High School was one of three organisations to be awarded the VERA distinction for outstanding support.

Shire president Matt Niikkula said Exmouth wouldn’t be the same community without the many volunteers who made a positive impact. “This is particularly true for our emergency services volunteers involved in the bush fire brigades, SES, Exmouth Marine Rescue and St John’s Ambulance,” he said.

“Supporting our emergency service volunteers by allowing them to be paid when called away from work during work hours is a small price to pay for being kept safe.”
