In a bid to promote sustainable living practices, the Care for Hedland Environmental Association and the Town of Port Hedland have collaborated to launch the first-ever Hedland Sustainable Living Show Day.

Scheduled for June 29th, 2024, at Gratwick Hall & Civic Centre Gardens, this event aims to empower the local community with practical insights and solutions for reducing their carbon footprint.

According to Narelle Wells, Coordinator of the Care for Hedland Environmental Association, the show day promises something for everyone:

“It’s a great way to hear about what you can do as an individual to reduce your carbon footprint and help make the world a better place, no matter how small the change may be.”

The event, aligned with the Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2022 – 2027, will feature a lineup of esteemed speakers and interactive workshops throughout the day.

Experts such as environmental scientist Josh Byrne and WA’s renowned ‘Frog Doctor’ Johnny Prefumo will headline discussions on topics ranging from sustainable home practices to habitat gardening and composting.

“We’re thrilled to bring together such a diverse range of experts who will share their knowledge and practical tips on sustainable living tailored to our region,” Ms Wells said.

Presentations include Josh Byrne’s insights on “Cool & Comfortable at Home in the Pilbara: Sustainable Living Hedland Style,” and Johnny Prefumo’s guide on attracting beneficial critters through habitat gardening.

Hedland Community Garden coordinator Robyn Todd will lead a workshop on easy home composting techniques, while Kahlia Jezek will introduce beginners to beekeeping in the Pilbara.

Michael Cuvalo from the Town of Port Hedland will explore sustainable practices like chicken coops and grey water systems, emphasizing their role in reducing environmental impact.

Additionally, discussions on recycling, energy audits, and community connectivity will enrich attendees’ understanding of holistic sustainability.

Stalls at the event will showcase products and services supporting sustainable lifestyles, including solar energy solutions from Lite Force Solar, gardening essentials from Hedland Down to Earth, and water conservation systems from Galvin’s Plumbing Supplies.

The Hedland Sustainable Living Show Day isn’t just about learning; it’s also about action.

Attendees can delight in a range of activities such as composting workshops, where they stand a chance to win one of 36 compost bins, and receive show bags filled with sustainable living goodies.

With the community’s active participation, the Hedland Sustainable Living Show Day is set to ignite a wave of positive change towards a greener, more sustainable future for Port Hedland and beyond.
