Harvey Weinstein set for April retrial on rape charge

Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein will face another trial in New York starting on April 14 over a charge on which jurors previously failed to reach a verdict.
Judge Curtis Farber said the retrial would address the count related to an alleged rape that the jury in the earlier case could not decide on.
Weinstein, 73, was sentenced in 2020 to 23 years in prison after being convicted of rape and criminal sexual acts. That conviction was unexpectedly overturned in 2024 because of procedural errors.
A retrial held in 2025 ended with a divided verdict and a deadlocked jury. Jurors found Weinstein guilty of a serious sexual offence against one woman, acquitted him of another charge involving a second woman and failed to reach a decision on a third count related to rape.
For the new proceedings in New York, Weinstein - who appeared in court on Wednesday, local time, in a wheelchair and is said to be in poor health - has hired a new team of lawyers.
Members of the team have previously represented former rapper Sean Combs and Luigi Mangione, who has been charged with the murder of a health insurance executive in Manhattan.
In a separate case, Weinstein was sentenced in 2023 in California to an additional 16 years in prison for sexual offences. His defence has appealed that conviction.
