West Coast recruit Deven Robertson says he is doing everything he can to earn round one debut for Eagles

West Coast recruit Deven Robertson has declared he will do everything he can to be in the Eagles’ midfield come round one no matter the role. Robertson is one of West Coast’s most spoken about recruits this off-season, with fans excited to see what the nephew of premiership backman and former skipper Darren Glass can produce since he crossed from Brisbane. Speaking at St Joseph’s School in Northam, where he attended as a kid as part of the Eagles’ community camp, Robertson said there were no walk-up spots in the club’s best 23 despite a one-win season in 2025. “One thing you can never take away from the guys here is their attitude and their willingness to learn and get better. They’re all attributes I’ve seen at the best club in Australia,” he said. “I’m certainly doing everything I can with my training. Competition for spots is still quite hot, and I’m certainly under no illusion that I will be walking into the midfield. “I’ll be doing everything I can to work my way up and hopefully, there round one. It’s going to be tough.” Robertson built a reputation as a tough, inside midfielder at the Lions albeit he was on the fringes, playing only 47 games in six seasons because of the strength of the Queensland club. However, the 24-year-old said he was unsure as to what his role would be in a new-look Eagles’ midfield alongside superstar Harley Reid, veteran Elliot Yeo and last year’s mid-season draftee Tom McCarthy. “I feel like I am gelling well, somewhat nicely. I am trying to complement those guys,” he said. “Harley is a super talent, and he’s going to be an absolute star for the club. Anyway, I can help him out and those other guys; I am happy to do so. “It’s pretty early in the piece, in the pre-season and (I’m unsure) what the year ahead holds ... we will wait to see how it all unfolds.” Robertson is one of a dozen new faces at the Eagles’ this season as they continue to rebuild their list following 11 wins in the past four seasons. For only the fourth time in their history, the Eagles used the No.1 pick in a draft, landing exciting Victorian prospect Willem Duursm,a who has already impressed onlookers, coaches and teammates in his short time at Mineral Resources Park. “He’s very special. He seems to have a bit more time than anyone else, which would be nice,” Robertson said of the talented teenager. “He is certainly a very smooth player.”
