WAFL 2026: Willie Rioli takes big step towards South Fremantle return as he gets set to train with Bulldogs

The prospect of a South Fremantle reunion for Willie Rioli is increasing, with the retired AFL star set to train with the WAFL club later this month. The West Australian can reveal the 2018 West Coast premiership forward will be in Perth next week, where he will meet with Bulldogs coach Craig White and the team’s leadership group. He will also train with the Dogs as the club ramps up its push to bring the former West Coast and Port Adelaide goalsneak into the fold in the pursuit of back-to-back WAFL premierships. The West Australian last year revealed Rioli was a prime target for the reigning premiers, given his considerable family connection with the club. His father Willie Sr played 48 games and kicked 53 goals for South Fremantle in two separate stints (1989-1990 and 1994) before he was recruited to Hawthorn. South Fremantle president Peter Christie, chief executive Cam Britt and football boss Charlie Burke flew to Darwin at the weekend to watch Rioli play for the Tiwi Bombers, where he was named best on ground for a three-goal effort in a win against Palmerston. The three then met with the 30-year-old on Sunday where he expressed interest in returning to the Bulldogs in some capacity this season although it is unlikely he will play a full fixture. Rioli played colts for South Fremantle meaning he is classified as a one-point player under the WAFL player point system, which would allow the club to recruit him despite having a squeeze on points after winning the 2025 premiership. It is understood Rioli is keen to reconnect with former teammates including new Bulldogs assistant coach Andrew Gaff as well as premiership players Isiah Winder and Jamaine Jones. “South Fremantle has a 50 year association with the Northern Territory and the Rioli family and they are relationships that we hold dearly,” Britt — who is a board member at the Tiwi Bombers — told The West Australian. “Willie is a fantastic character and footballer. And we’re excited about what the future may hold for both he and the football club in whatever capacity that takes.” Rioli played played 51 games for West Coast, playing a pivotal role in the 2018 flag after he was drafted with pick No.52 in 2016 from Glenelg. He was traded to Port Adelaide in 2022, playing 58 games and kicking 91 goals before he retired at the end of last season.
