Perth Wildcats have appointed Boston Celtics assistant coach Scott Morrison as their new head coach.

In one of the more extraordinary signings in Australian sport, the club will now have a coach with the same name as the nation’s Prime Minister.

Having interviewed for the head coaching position at the Celtics and Washington Wizards, Morrison contacted the Wildcats early this month to express interest in the position.

It is understood Celtics staff also contacted the club to push for his appointment.

The Game AFL 2024

Morrison, 44, spent three seasons leading Boston’s G-League team before becoming a Celtics assistant, winning G-League Coach of the Year.

He has also worked internationally for his native Canada and at college level.

Morrison has replaced five-time championship coach Trevor Gleeson who ironically has moved to the NBA to work for Canada’s Toronto Raptors.

His appointment follows Danny Mills being appointed as Perth’s General Manager of Basketball after extensive experience at the Philadelphia 76ers and ex-Cairns coach Mike Kelly being appointed as Associate Head Coach.

Both Morrison and Mills now have to organise to get into Australia and serve their quarantine before being able to walk into the club. Morrison already has some experience with Australians having constantly been mistaken for our Prime Minster by angry people on social media.

Morrison will be formally unveiled by the Wildcats this morning and will immediately be known as Coach ScoMo.
