Over the course of their storied history, Perth Scorchers have had plenty of international players become fan favourites — and their latest Women’s Big Bash League import appears on track to join those ranks.

Pakistan’s Fatima Sana made a fine debut for the club in their season-opening nine-wicket win over Melbourne Renegades on Saturday, finishing with figures of 2-27 from her four overs.

In front of a strong Pakistani presence at the WACA Ground, the all-rounder claimed a memorable first victim for the club in Australia captain Sophie Molineux, who she had caught at mid-off with her eighth delivery in Scorchers colours.

Entrusted to bowl in both the power surge and for the final over of the Renegades’ batting effort, Sana was denied the wicket of another international star in Georgia Wareham after being shown to have marginally overstepped, but did end a fine 48 from Nicole Fultum by bowling the wicketkeeper with the penultimate ball of the innings.

Sana said she had been heartened by the support she had received from both the crowd on the night and her teammates since arriving in Australia last week.

“I’ve seen a lot of Pakistani fans here and they came for me. To be honest, I’m humbled and grateful for them,” Sana said.

“I’ve seen a very good crowd here and they’re all very supportive.

“It’s the first win and I got the opportunity to play here, so I think that’s a good sign.

“They are really kind, the whole team, I am lucky to have them. I really enjoyed everything, because they are so supportive.”

When announcing Sana’s signing, the Scorchers said she would only be available for the first eight games of the season due to international commitments.

But reports out of her home country say the Pakistan Cricket Board is considering excusing her from a training camp ahead of the national side’s tour of West Indies, which could prolong her availability.

The Scorchers travelled to Melbourne today as part of a tight turnaround ahead of their clash with Melbourne Stars — who beat defending champions Hobart Hurricanes in their first game of the tournament — at Junction Oval on Monday.

But Sana said the schedule held no fears for her side.

“As a professional team, we know there’s travel . . . so we have to manage it,” she said.

“We are a good team, so we will just try to play against them and enjoy it as much as we can.”

The Scorchers have named an unchanged 13-player squad for their meeting with the Stars. Seamer Ruby Strange and top-order batter Ines McKeon were Perth’s unused players in their win over the Renegades.
