Reinsman Ryan Warwick announced carnival plans for Vampiro after he stylishly won tonight’s $50,000 Mount Eden Sprint (1730m) at Gloucester Park.

The gelding, trained by Greg and Skye Bond, scored narrowly from pacemaker Maczaffair after facing the breeze.

Vampiro, who started at $5.20 with TABtouch, rated 1:55.1.

Rocknroll Lincoln finished 3.5m away in third place..

“Vampiro will be set for the summer carnival,” Warwick said after the trophy presentation.

“It’s a great honour he’s won a race which honours the legendary Mount Eden, undoubtedly one of the best pacers ever to race in Australia.”

Vampiro will be in line to tackle the $300,000 Fremantle Cup (2536m) and $450,000 WA Pacing Cup (2936m) at Gloucester Park next January.

Warwick sprinted him forward early from gate six in the Mount Eden Sprint and he settled outside Maczaffair.

Bold front running tactics were adopted by Maczaffair’s reinsman Mark Reed after he took advantage of a gate one draw.

Fancied rival King Of Swing dropped back to sixth position and then became locked between rivals after the bell.

Maczaffair, who was racing first-up, appeared to still be travelling strongly near rhe home turn.

But courage was shown by Vampiro when lifted in final strides to claim the pacemaker by a head.

Vampiro has won four races and run two places in his past six starts.

His tally from 25 starts at Gloucester Park is 13 wins and nine places.

He continued a run of success for Warwick and the Bonds, who had won earlier tonight with Better B Chevron.
