Perth’s golf superstar Min Woo Lee has fired off an opening round even par to begin his campaign at The Open.

The 27-year-old sustained his strong play from last week’s Scottish Open, where he finished with a solo second and fell just short of the victory behind South Korean Tom Kim.

Looking to earn his spot among golf’s young stars, Lee had a steady start at The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale with a even par 70 to sit at T35 when his round ended - trailing leaders Sungjae Im and Dan Brown by four strokes.

Opening with back-to-back pars after an aggressive play with driver off the first, the Dockers fan looked in strife after finding a dreaded green-side pot bunkers on three.

The flat stick’s hot form from last week carried over into Thursday with Lee getting up and down out of the bunker, thanks to a prodigiously long par-save putt.

An untimely bogey on the fourth was made up for by a pair of birdies to see the ‘Chef’ reach the turn at one under with a front nine 33.

Lee left some opportunities out there on Royal Birkdale with underwhelming approach play for his standard leaving him long putts that fell painfully short on the nine and 10.

Avoiding any of the afternoon wind, Lee stumbled on the 17th with a bogey to enter the clubhouse with a one over 37 on the back nine.

The West Aussies’ putting was among some of the best from the early group and kept him alive, registering a staggering 3.055 strokes gained with his putter, which was second best when he wrapped up, while draining 110 feet of putts.

Which made up for his poor ball striking, which was a highlight of his game in Scotland, hitting nine greens in regulation and the Perth golfer found just four fairways.

The extra two days of preparation boded well for defending champion and world No.1 Scottie Scheffler who was three under through 16 following his missed cut, playing alongside LIV golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Tyrell Hatton who each opened with three under and two under through 16 respectively.

Jason Day is looking to get back to his best and a 30-foot birdie putt on the fifth helped get the Queenslander up and about as one of seven Australian’s teeing it up in Liverpool.

Open champion Cam Smith’s streaky play in Major’s continued, trading a birdie for bogeys to go two over through nine.
