Cameron Davis has stormed to his best US PGA Tour result, the Australian finishing third thanks to a hot final round at The American Express tournament in California.

The Sydney product fired eight birdies in a bogey-free final round of 64 to finish at 20 under at the West Stadium course at La Quinta.

But the 2017 Australian Open champion was outdone by victor Kim Si-woo (23 under) and American Patrick Cantlay, who shot a final-round 61 to finish one shot behind the South Korean.

It was the 25-year-old's first top-three finish on the American tour, but his fourth top-10 result since January last year.

Davis holed a nine-iron approach for one of two eagles in round three to begin the final round tied for eighth and didn't flinch as he moved within a shot of the leaders in the final six holes.

A long-range putt for birdie on the 15th kept him in the conversation, but his birdie putt on the 16th just slipped past the hole as Cantlay and then Kim both nailed long-range efforts of their own to edge clear in a high-quality finale.

The Game AFL 2024

"It was just a day where actually all parts of the game kind of worked at the same time," Davis said.

"It was nice to see a low score on the board, but it's the sort of day where everyone up near the top of the leaderboard's going low as well.

"It would have been cool to get a couple more, but I did a pretty good job."

Comfortingly for Davis, he felt he "wasn't playing out of his skin" and that a Tour victory didn't seem out of reach.

"This is the sort of game that I've had for a while, it's just been nice to see multiple parts of the game click together in the same day," he added.

"I'm getting closer to it, it's obviously great to keep seeing personal bests keep rolling through, so hopefully this leads to a little higher on the leaderboard in the near future.

"It's been great to see improvement because that keeps you excited and keeps you working hard as well."

Compatriot Matt Jones was even through his final round to finish 11-under in a tie for 21st while Rhein Gibson tied for 40th three shots further back.

Davis expects to line up in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines from Friday (AEST), where Aussie Marc Leishman will return as defending champion.
