Impressive performances over world no.1 the Netherlands have the Hockeyroos believing they are a genuine chance to win their first Olympic gold medal in 20 years later this year in Tokyo.

The Australians took the Dutch to a penalty shoot-out in last year’s inaugural FIH Pro-League final and claimed a 1-0 victory in February last year, their first in a number of years.

Both the men’s and women’s national teams return to action next weekend when they take on world no.3 Argentina in two double-headers at the Perth Hockey Stadium, as they continue their Tokyo games preparation.

Forward Mariah Williams said finishing second in last year’s pro league gave the team a lot of motivation.

“We want to push even harder, coming up with the Olympics to be number one,” she said.

“That (win over the Dutch) really put some hope into our eyes. We have a lot of hope behind us and we are excited for the Olympics and hopefully coming up against the Dutch.

“We are looking forward to it (playing Argentina). We’ve had a few weeks here working hard and trying to fix up the things we didn’t do well in Sydney.”

Kookaburras co-captain Aran Zalewski and his chargers are also preparing to break an Olympic gold medal drought, as they pursuit their first honour since the 2004 games in Athens.

Zalewski said he was excited to take his 2019 FIH Pro-League championship team to the Olympic Games.

“I am very excited, this year started almost for us at the end of last year,” he said.

“There are a lot of guys going through their first (Olympic) cycle, you’ve got guys like Eddie Ockenden going through his fourth cycle.

“So there’s a vast majority of experience in our squad and that’s what I think makes us a very good prospect for Tokyo.

“For us the Pro-League has been a great initiative to expose ourselves to the best teams in the world.”

Both teams will wear an Indigenous playing kit for the first time for next weekend’s clashes against Argentina.

The artwork on the front of both playing kits was designed and painted by Aboriginal dual Olympian gold medallist and former Hockeyroo and Federal Senator Nova Peris and also includes artwork by Northern Territory Indigenous artist Nathan Patterson.

As per their names, the Hockeyroos will wear a design with a Kangaroo on the front, while the men’s team will be represented by the Kookaburra.
