Darius Boyd has been unveiled as the new coach of Queensland after Billy Slater stepped down in the wake of a State of Origin series defeat.

A relatively low-profile candidate compared to Slater and fellow former teammates turned broadcasters Johnathan Thurston and Cameron Smith, who both opted against going for the role, Boyd has signed a two-year deal to lead the Maroons.

The 39-year-old moves up to the men’s team after leading the Queensland under-19 side to series wins over the past two years.

“It’s a privileged position and I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” Boyd said on Thursday.

“I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well.

“My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us.”

Boyd, who won two premierships under legendary coach Wayne Bennett and captained the Broncos, scored 17 tries in 28 matches for the Maroons after arriving on the scene during their Mal Meninga-led era of dominance.

He finished his Origin playing career under Kevin Walters and later served under him as a Broncos assistant.

QRL chair Brian Canavan said Boyd “lives and breathes what it means to represent” Queensland.

“His playing achievements speak for themselves, but what has impressed us just as much is the work he has done since retirement to develop as a coach and leader,” Canavan said.

“He has built strong relationships throughout our pathways system, earned the respect of players and staff, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping young people reach their potential.

“Darius understands the responsibility that comes with the Maroons jersey. He knows our culture, our history and the standards required to succeed at the highest level.”

Boyd’s appointment ensures the 2027 Origin series will be a battle between rookie coaches.

Former NSW player Matt King succeeded Laurie Daley last month on an initial two-year contract.

King had been an assistant to Daley and Michael Maguire with the Blues, while he will step down as a Roosters assistant to take on the Origin gig.
