BMX star Logan Martin wins Opperman Medal

Tokyo Olympics star Logan Martin has capped a memorable 2021 after winning the Sir Hubert 'Oppy' Opperman Medal as AusCycling's cyclist of the year.

The 28-year-old from the Gold Coast became the toast of the nation when he won the inaugural BMX freestyle Olympic gold.

Martin also secured a second world title.

He is the first BMX freestyle cyclist and the second BMX rider to win the medal.

"Honestly, it is super amazing to win this award," Martin said.

"There are a lot of amazing athletes that have won this award.

"And to now be a winner of this award is super something super special.

"I have always just ridden my bike and put in the work, just like any other athlete does and to now be sitting alongside some amazing names, it is pretty hard to believe to be honest."

BMX freestyle was one of five sports in Tokyo on show for the first time at the Olympics.

The pre-Games favourite, Martin stunned his rivals with a spectacular effort in his first 60-second run, awarded a score of 93.30 to be the best of the nine finalists.
