Australian Caleb Ewan has been pipped to the finish by German cyclist Pascal Ackermann in the opening stage of the UAE Tour.

Bora-Hansgrohe's Ackermann left the 25-year-old Sydneysider, racing for Lotto-Soudal, in second place and Frenchman Rudy Barbier from Israel Start-Up Nation came in third following a tight sprint to the line in Dubai on Sunday.

Slovenian Luka Mezgec, from Australian team Mitchelton-Scott, came in fifth after his team led the group into the finishing straight.

As winner of stage one, Ackermann will wear the red jersey from Monday in the week-long tour.
