Deepak Hooda has smashed an unbeaten 47 off 29 balls as India eased to a seven-wicket victory in the rain-hit first Twenty20 international against Ireland.

Hooda, promoted to open the batting for the first time in his 160-match T20 career, hit six fours and two sixes in Malahide on Sunday to help carry the tourists past their 109-run target to 3-111 off just 9.2 overs. The match had a delayed start and was reduced to 12 overs per side.

India captain Hardik Pandya scored 24 runs from 12 balls, including three sixes, and Ishan Kishan 26 from 11 with three fours and two maximums in a convincing display.

Right-arm paceman Craig Young took 2-18 for Ireland in his two overs.

The hosts earlier posted 4-108 from their 12 overs after being asked to bat first. Harry Tector top-scored with an unbeaten 64 from 33 balls. His innings included six fours and three sixes.

Despite wickets falling around him, Tector once again showed why he is one of the most exciting young batters in Irish cricket. He had started 2022 with three successive ODI half-centuries in the Caribbean and showed that he could cut it against India's IPL superstars in T20Is as well.
