Maddison Keeney will dive for Commonwealth Games gold in the 3m springboard tonight after progressing safely from qualifying at Optus Aquatic Stadium this morning.

The WA gun bombed her final dive in the 3m synchro on Wednesday but made a strong return this morning, nailing all five dives, despite a false start on her second dive.

If not for the penalty she received for that, the 21-year-old would have finished higher up in the preliminaries.

Fellow Australian and defending champion from Glasgow Esther Qin, who also won gold in the 3m synchro alongside Georgia Sheehan, was the top qualifier with 332.10 points ahead of Canadian pair Pamela Ware (318.45) and Jennifer Abel (315.80), England’s Katherine Torrance (305.85), Scot Grace Reid (305.15) and Keeney (302.50).

Keeney’s synchro partner Anabelle Smith also progressed to the final.
