Australia's self-described "most underrated passer in the world" hopes to use his Boomers return as a springboard back into the NBA.

Thon Maker will don green and gold for this week's FIBA World Cup qualifying games against China and Japan in Melbourne, having missed out on the Tokyo Olympics.

The 213cm centre ended the 2021-22 G League season with the Long Island Nets and is on the lookout for a fourth NBA team following stints with Milwaukee, Detroit and Cleveland.

Maker has no doubt outstanding performances with the Boomers can help push his case.

"Definitely," Maker said ahead of the clash with China at John Cain Arena on Thursday night.

"A great example of that is Jock Landale (at the Tokyo Olympics), he did that with the (San Antonio) Spurs.

"It's an opportunity there on the table for me as well but that's not my focus.

"My focus is for us to win (and) us as a unit to get better every single day, and me personally to get better every single day."

Maker is not short on confidence, as evidenced by Wednesday's claim to being the world's most underrated passer.

"Some people laugh at that, but I believe that," the 2016 NBA first-round draft pick said.

While he remains unattached, Maker could head back to the United States to participate in NBA veteran camp workouts.

NBL clubs are also keen to secure the 25-year-old's signature if he decides to play at home.

"It looks interesting but I've left that with my agent," Maker said.

"It's something to think about, for sure."

Boomers coach Brian Goorjian said Maker will be a huge asset in the World Cup qualifiers as he tries to nullify China's man mountain Zhou Qi, the 216cm South East Melbourne Phoenix centre.

"Thon is tremendous defensively, he's a great rebounder," Goorjian said.

"(China) have got bigs and he's going to be a real important piece on both ends of the floor."
