WA Football Media Guild awards: Seven West Media scoops pool for 2021 coverage

It was one of the biggest footy years WA has ever experienced - and the team at Seven West Media have been recognised for the way they covered it by dominating at the WA Football Media Guild awards.

Seven’s Ryan Daniels snared his second consecutive Geoff Christian Award - shared with the ABC’s Clint Wheeldon - for the greatest contribution across the year, with his work in breaking the story of Lachie Neale exploring a trade home to Fremantle also earning him the George Grljusich Award for best news story and best news presentation.

The West Australian’s Eliza Reilly, Craig O’Donoghue, Jordan McArdle, Braden Quartermaine, Steve Butler, Mark Duffield and Glen Quartermain all received nods for their outstanding coverage over the past year.

Reilly snared the Bernie Kirwan-Ward award for best WAFL story as she became a driving force behind the WAFLW retaining their reserves league for 2022, and took home the Women’s Football Media Award for her unparalleled reporting on the WAFLW and AFLW.

Reilly also claimed Emerging Media Talent Award alongside 10 News First’s Ashleigh Nelson, as the two shared the privilege of being inaugural recipients of the award named in honour of the late former WA Football Media Guild President Tracey Lewis.

O’Donoghue’s exclusive report on West Coast Eagles premiership player Daniel Venables needing to consult AFL medicos before mapping out a possible return to football was selected as the Jack Lee Best News Story of the year.

He also claimed the inaugural award for Best Columnist for his hard-line stance on touchy topics across the footy agenda.

McArdle was named Best Overall Online Performer and said it was an “honour” to claim the Perth Football League Media Award in the competition’s milestone 100th season.

The Ross Elliot Award for Best Match Report was given to Quartermaine for his coverage of the Fremantle Dockers’ nail-biting win over the Sydney Swans at Optus Stadium, where the footy scribe detailed Lance Franklin and Nat Fyfe’s epic battle in the wet weather.

Butler claimed the WA Country Football League Media Award, while Quartermain’s feature on Melbourne’s Max Gawn in the lead up to the AFL grand final, titled How Max Tamed His Demons, was named the Alan Newman Best Feature Story.

Duffield claimed the Umpiring Media Award for his story on Muslim teenager Muneerah Foster, with Josh Garlepp winning Most Outstanding Use of Social Media for his viral videos.

Seven’s Daniels also snared best feature story after profiling Venables, while colleague Rory Campbell won best TV match report.
