Top West Australian draftee Daniel Curtin has inherited a number made famous by high-flying Adelaide forward Tony Modra.

Curtin will wear the No.6 for the Crows next season, having been taken with pick No.8 in last year’s draft.

The Claremont product will be the 11th player to wear the guernsey, following in the footsteps of Modra, who played 118 games and kicked 440 goals wearing it.

Former No.1 draftee Bryce Gibbs, Melbourne premiership defender Jake Lever, ruckman Jonathon Griffin and three-time Hawthorn premiership player Jack Gunston also wore the guernsey.

Meanwhile, small forward Izak Rankine has traded in his No.22 guernsey for the one made famous by arguably the greatest Adelaide player of all time - Andrew McLeod.

Rankine will become the fifth-consecutive Indigenous player to wear the No.23 at the start of next season, following on from two-time Norm Smith medalist McLeod as well as Jared Petrenko, Charlie Cameron and Shane McAdam.

“I was born on the 23rd (of April) so it’s my favourite number,” Rankine told the club’s website.

“And growing up I tried to wear it as much as I could, but with a lot of the junior guernseys they were smallest to biggest so I’d often end up with number three or something like that.

“When I got to Gold Coast it was already taken by Sean Lemmens, so I went for 22 which was the next closest.

“Then when I came to Adelaide, Shane (McAdam) already had 23 so I stayed with 22.

“But as soon as it opened up I was keen to wear it. I know the history behind it with a lot of Indigenous players having been in the number and I want to do it proud.

“And having previously been Bunji’s number, he is such a key part of the history of the club, I loved watching him play when I was younger so I can’t wait to wear it myself.”
