More than 2700 drivers caught speeding in WA school zones in first week of school, police figures reveal

More than 2700 drivers have been caught speeding in WA school zones in the first week of the school year. Police released the alarming figures on Friday and said three motorists tested positive to drugs or alcohol, in school zones between February 2 and February 6. Six drivers were also caught driving without a seatbelt and one was caught using a mobile phone. Police impounded three vehicles during the five-day operation. Supt Glenn Spencer, of the road policing command, described the numbers as “unacceptable”, and said school zones existed to protect children during the busiest time of the day. “School zones are clearly signposted and reduced speed limits apply for a reason,” he said. “More than 2700 motorists were caught exceeding the speed limit, placing children and the wider community at risk. “Police will continue to take enforcement action against motorists who ignore school zone speed limits or engage in unsafe driving behaviour. “Compliance with road rules in school zones is not optional, and enforcement will continue throughout the school year.” Police Minister Reece Whitby said each of the drivers had put the health and safety of hundreds of children at serious risk. “More than 2700 drivers chose to ignore the law in school zones — that’s 2700 reckless decisions that could have resulted in a serious incident involving a child,” he said. “Drivers need to wake up, slow down and remember whatever your excuse is for speeding — it’s not worth it. “School zones exist because children are vulnerable and it’s our commitment to keep them safe. “There is no reason for speeding, using your phone or driving under the influence near schools — and if you don’t put the safety of children first — then you’ll face the full force of the law.” A mandatory 40km/h speed limit is in place from 7.30am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm in designated school zones on school days. Supt. Spencer said the operation was about reminding the community that one poor decision could have devastating consequences. “Slow down, pay attention and make choices that help protect the most vulnerable people on our rods,” he said. “Keeping children safe on their way to and from school is a responsibility every driver shares.” In February 2024, police issued more than 400 speeding infringements in just 90 minutes at a single school crossing — used by students from Presbyterian Ladies College — on Stirling Highway, in Peppermint Grove. Of the 1400 motorists, 401 were caught speeding, with 281 exceeding the limit by 10-19km/h. Twenty-six drivers were caught speeding by more than 20-29km/h, with a further two punished for exceeding the limit by 39-39km/h.
