Perth has again been smashed by a winter storm, with the city now officially recording its wettest July for 26 years.

An intense cold front swept over the city on Monday evening, bringing with it heavy rainfall.

At Floreat Park, 27.4mm of rain fell in the hour to 6pm, with 25mm falling in an hour at Kings Park.

The heavy falls took the city’s rain gauge past 231mm, which was the mark recorded in July 2000, but still short of the all-time record of 278mm, recorded in July 1995.

The Bureau of Meteorology reissued a severe weather warning at 6.16pm.

“Ahead of the cold front a rain band is bringing heavy rain and strong squalls to western parts of the South West Land Division which will extend eastwards overnight Monday and continue into Tuesday.” it said.

“Widespread damaging winds, averaging 60-70 km/h with gusts to 120 km/h are currently developing southwest of Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay, including the Perth Metro area.

“Damaging winds will extend northward and eastward to the remaining warning area overnight Monday and into Tuesday morning.

“Locally dangerous winds with gusts in excess of 125 km/h are possible southwest of a line from Geraldton to Bremer Bay and may continue through the evening.”

Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding may occur over the northern South West, Lower West, and the adjacent Great Southern district, particularly near the Darling Scarp.”

Perth’s southern suburbs bore the brunt of the storm, with Rockingham, Byford, Success, Spearwood and Gosnells receiving the most calls pleas for State Emergency Services help.

The agency responded to 150 requests for assistance up until 8.50pm.

The majority of the calls were for flooding and roof damage.
