Fear not, West Australians — spring conditions are officially on the way following a gloomy cool and cloudy end to September.

On Monday severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of WA, as lightning and hail continued to batter parts of the State.

Senior Bureau meteorologist Jessica Lingard told PerthNow that the weather system that had wreaked havoc in some regions over the weekend and into the start of the week, was now on its way out.

“Those incredible weather systems we’ve seen in the last few days have now shifted a little bit further to the east,” Ms Lingard began.

“There is a chance of some severe storms in the interior of the state around the eastern parts of the Goldfields, down into Eucla, this afternoon and maybe again tomorrow. But really, once we get through tomorrow, that system will have cleared out of the state.”

Despite some Perth locals feeling the chill on Tuesday morning, overnight temperatures in the city remained around the September average of 9.7C.

“In fact, for the month as a whole, average overnight temperatures for Perth are about 2 to 3 degrees above typical. For daytime temperatures, again, about 2 degrees above average,” Ms Lingard continued.

“We did have a few beautiful couple of days where we were in the very high 20s easing into the 30s, mid-month, so things are perhaps feeling a little cooler in comparison.”

September was largely warmer and drier than usual, with 24.6mm of rainfall in the first 26 days of the month compared to an average 70mm.

The meteorologist continued: “We’re turning the corner into a bit of spring weather. We do have a ridge of high pressure that’s coming, reaching the Southwest Capes by this evening, and then pushing through the metro area early tomorrow morning.

“There’ll be a couple of showers in the metro area tonight into tomorrow morning but then from the afternoon onwards, through to the end of the week a nice high pressure system will clear it away.

“Clear skies from a west coast trough — that’s one of our summer weather pattern features — that will clear and warm things up for the first couple of days of October.

“Temperatures will be in the low to mid 20s, which is a little above average for the time of year with the October average maximum temperature for Perth being 23.5C.”
