Port Hedland shark attack victim’s brother-in-law saved Robbie Peck’s life with boating supplies

The bloody details of a Port Hedland shark attack that sent a local into emergency surgery have been revealed. Robbie Peck, who is the Port Hedland Spearfishing Club president, was about 11 kilometres offshore when the shark sunk its teeth into his upper arm and wrist while spearfishing on Friday. With help 30 minutes away, his brother-in-law Ben subbed in standard boat supplies as life saving medical equipment. GT Diving owner Wally Galli told 7NEWS the details of how Ben saved Robbie’s life. “He took the speargun rubber and made a makeshift tourniquet and used the wetsuit itself to keep everything in place,” he said Mr Peck’s young son was also on the boat at the time of the attack. “The young fella was covered in blood — he was there helping his dad,” Mr Galli said. The attack was believed to be by a bull shark trying to steal his fish. The exact moment the shark charged was caught on camera as Mr Peck was wearing a GoPro, however, the device was dropped in the ocean. The traumatic events from Friday have not seemed to deter people from getting out onto the water with boats still coming in and out of the Port Hedland marina. Mr Peck is recovering well in hospital after undergoing surgery on his arm today. A Royal Perth Hospital spokesperson said it was unclear whether he would need more surgeries at this stage.
