A horse has been killed after being hit by a car in an outer suburb of Perth, just a day after a stampede of thoroughbreds were spotted galloping down Kwinana Freeway.

Police said a Mazda SUV collided with the horse about 10pm on Friday on Abernethy Road in Oakford, north east of Rockingham.

The horse was so badly injured from the crash, it had to be euthanised.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was not seriously injured.

Rangers from the area have since removed the dead horse from the road and traffic is not believed to be impacted.

It comes after a pack of horses escaped on Friday, causing chaos on the Kwinana Freeway.

The animals bolted northbound and drivers said they had to swerve to avoid hitting them.

The horses were reportedly rounded up, but police were unsure if the latest incident involved one of the escapees from Friday.
