A little bit of country life came to the city on Saturday with the annual Farmer on Your Plate festival.

With giant smiles, colourful face paint and ice creams in hand, local kids spent the afternoon getting up close with farm life at Fremantle Esplanade Park.

From pony rides and barrel tossing to cow milking and sheep shearing, there was a little country magic for everyone to enjoy.

Line dancing quickly emerged as one of the biggest hits of the afternoon, with locals of all ages kicking up their heels and joining in.

Pernille Loughton brought her two granddaughters, Layla Hogan, 5, and Allira Hogan, 7, to make the most of the afternoon.

“We live just up the road so we came specifically for this because we had the girls for the afternoon,” she said.

“We like to support local things and I mean it’s all free, so it’s a lovely day out with the kids. Anywhere you go, you’ve got to pay for it. Here it’s free, which I think is really good.”

For Layla and Allira, the hands-on farm experience was the ultimate highlight.

“They’ve loved getting their face painting and they love milking the cow — now they are excited to get an ice cream,” Ms Loughton laughed.

It wasn’t just those who planned ahead who got to enjoy the festivities.

Kale Wells stumbled across the event while spending the day out in Freo with his three-year-old daughter, Pia.

“I can’t say we’ve specifically come down for this, but she’s having fun. It’s a nice thing to do on the weekend,” Kale said.

“Cow milking has been her favourite, along with the barrel toss and pony ride. And it’s all for free, which is nice these days.”
