There’s something about a negroni that seems particularly well suited to travel. Perhaps it’s the Italian pedigree, or simply the fact the ruby-red cocktail somehow tastes better when you’re on holiday or perched at a hotel bar.
Either way, negroni lovers have a good excuse to order their favourite tipple this month, with Negroni Week returning September 21-27.
Here’s how venues across Australia are getting into the spirit.
QT is stretching the celebrations well beyond a week, teaming up with Campari for Negroni Paradiso — a month-long ode to the cocktail running throughout September.
Here in Perth, three $22 variations of the negroni will be available at Santini Bar and the Rooftop at QT Perth.
Purists can stick with The Classic, served exactly as a negroni should be. Or there’s The Director’s Cut, which gives the drink a local twist with QT’s very own Gilded Chaos Gin. Then there’s The Uncut, a zero-alcohol option promising all the bitters without the booze. And, because QT rarely does things by halves, each drink arrives with a serve of Campari-dusted popcorn.
If you’re picking up on the cinematic theme, it isn’t entirely for show. Campari has a century-long association with cinema, and on September 24, Santini Bar will transform into a makeshift movie theatre for a 6pm screening of the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.
QT Sydney is getting in on the action, too, serving the same three cocktails before screening The Italian Job at 6.30pm on September 30 in its aptly named Screening Room + Reel Bar.
Elsewhere, OTTO Sydney and Brisbane are marking Negroni Week with a $45 special from September 23 to 27, pairing pasta and dessert with a Negroni Sbagliato. Classic negronis will also be available for $20.
Meanwhile, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is keeping things simple with $14 negronis from September 21 to 27 across several of its bars and restaurants. Those feeling peckish can upgrade to the aptly named Groni Snack — a classic negroni served with hot fries — for $18.
And at Bennetti’s in Sydney, the celebrations take a distinct Italian turn, with cocktail-and-food pairings accompanied by live jazz.
Options include a classic negroni for two paired with a four-cheese pizza and prosciutto, or a more adventurous take made with Never Never Oyster Shell Gin and served alongside Sydney rock oysters with a negroni mignonette.
So, whether you like your negroni classic, sparkling, booze-free or accompanied by a plate of hot chips, there should be plenty of ways to raise a glass this Negroni Week.
