Traffic has backed up on the south-bound lanes of the Kwinana Freeway after fire crews were called to extinguish a bizarre blaze near Canning Highway this afternoon.

A spokesman for Main Roads said it appeared a driver had dumped his truck’s load after it began smoking.

DFES sent three appliances from Kensington and Canning Vale to extinguished the fire, with early indications that it was “rubbish” that had fuelled it.

The left lane of the freeway has been blocked off and traffic is slow moving.

“Left emergency lane blocked ... due to a load from a truck catching fire,” Main Roads tweeted.

“Drive with extreme caution.”
