Transperth has warned city commuters that bus services are being delayed due to the School Strike for Climate rally at State Parliament.

The public transport authority says “due to unplanned protest action”, routes 24, 25, 26, 27, 203, 935 and the green CAT buses are “experiencing some delays” because they have been forced to deviate from the usual route.

Stops long Malcolm Street and St Georges Terrace, between Mill and Havelock streets have been closed during the protest.

Transperth spokesman David Hynes said he did not expect the delays to be significant.

“I don’t expect that (the delays are) going to be sustained, nor are they substantial,” Transperth spokesman David Hynes said.

The Greta Thunberg-inspired Climate Strike is being held across the country, demanding that “our politicians take our future seriously and treat climate change for what it is: a crisis”.

Footage posted on Extinction Rebellion WA’s Facebook page shows hundreds of people at the steps of Parliament.

Yesterday, Education Minister Sue Ellery issued a stern warning to school students planning to skip school to rally for climate action, saying while she encouraged young people to be involved in public policy, it should not come at the expense of their education.

“As the education minister, I must stress that this a very important part of the school year and it is critical that students attend school when they should be there,” Ms Ellery said.

Protesters are demanding no new coal, oil or gas projects and 100 per cent renewable energy generations and exports by 2030.
