A rescue chopper has been sent to the scene of a horrific crash on a notorious stretch of Indian Ocean Drive, with a critically injured woman trapped in a vehicle.

Six rescue crews have also rushed to the scene of the two-car crash near the intersection of Seabird Road in Breton Bay, with St John ambulance crews, and firefighters working to free the woman.

Three other people have reportedly suffered minor injuries.

Indian Ocean Drive has a history of serious and fatal collisions near the Seabird and Lancelin turnoffs.

In June 2017, a fatal head-on collision near the Seabird turnoff closed the highway and required emergency airlifts.

In August 2019 a head-on crash just north of Seabird Road resulted in one fatality after a car collided with a tourist bus and another vehicle, leading to a major emergency response.

More recently in December 2023 a fatal crash occurred in Gabbadah near Seabird when a utility left the road and struck a tree.

More to come.
