A truck crash has reportedly dumped a load of builders' sand on a busy Perth highway, causing traffic headaches for morning commuters.

The crash occurred some time before 5am on Roe Highway near Nicholson Road in Canning Vale, spilling what Main Roads described as a non-hazardous substance on the southbound lanes.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said staff had tested the substance and deemed it to be safe.

Radio station 6PR is reporting the substance is builders' sand.

A Main Roads street sweeper will clean up the spill but southbound lanes on Roe Highway near Nicholson Road and Willeri Drive remain closed
