Government eyes one million visitors target to Perth Zoo, as thousands claim free entry ticket

More than 44,000 Perth families have already claimed their free Zoo tickets, as the Government seeks to draw a million people through the doors of the popular attraction each year. Announcing a free ticket scheme in South Perth on Sunday, Premier Roger Cook acknowledged that while the Zoo helped keep kids entertained, the cost had become “fairly expensive”. Under the program, families will be able to claim free entry to the Zoo for two adults and two children through the Government’s ServiceWA app, to use before November 30. Figures provided by the Government showed more than 44,000 families had claimed their free tickets after the announcement on Sunday. But Environment Minister Reece Whitby said his goal was to draw more than a million people to the South Perth attraction in coming years, with ongoing works to grow the Zoo’s appeal. “We know that the cost of living is having an impact on Western Australian families, but there’s no reason that families that are struggling, that are finding it tough, shouldn’t be able to have a great day out at the zoo,” Mr Whitby said. “In the financial year to June, the Zoo had visitation of 800,000 people. It was a record. “We’re hoping, with this initiative, we can break that record this financial year, and who knows, we might crack the million mark. That’s an aspiration of mine. “The Zoo is better and getting better all the time. So if you haven’t been to the Zoo, this is a fantastic opportunity to come along and see what’s changed.” The program follows a range of cost-of-living relief measures pushed by the Cook Government, including energy bill credits, the Student Assistance Payment and free public transport for students going to school.
