Toddler fighting for life after being pulled from backyard pool in Sydney’s southwest

A toddler is fighting for life after being pulled from a backyard pool in Sydney’s southwest.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Lockheed Street, Raby, about 7.30pm on Wednesday where they found the 20-month-old boy who had been dragged from the pool.

He was unconscious and unresponsive.

The boy was treated at the scene and taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead where he remains in a critical condition.

A crime scene has been established.

“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue; however, the incident is not being treated as suspicious,” police said.

On average, six children drown in private swimming pools in NSW each year.

According to Royal Life Saving NSW the most common reasons for drownings in backyard pools include lack of fencing or faulty gates.

Between July 1, 2002 and June 30, 2017 148 children aged up to four-years-old drowned across NSW, including 91 in private pools.
