Australind Senior High School students are set for a once in a lifetime opportunity — to pick the brains of a Nobel Prize winner.

Internationally-renowned physicist Barry Marshall, who is based in Perth, will be heading to the school to work with senior science students.

Program coordinator of the mathematics and philosophy specialist program at the school, Brett Gaskell, said it was an exciting opportunity for students.

“He is a bit of a legend,” Mr Gaskell said.

Dr Marshall was awarded the prize with colleague Robin Warren in 2005, for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori.

As part of his research, Dr Marshall drank from a petri dish full of the bacteria, using his own body to prove that it caused ulcers.

He and a number of his final year Biomedical Science students from the University of WA were set to visit Australind to work with students last month, but the visit was postponed until a later date.
