A National Basketball League team will return to the South West for the first time in years for a special pre-season clash next month.
On August 14, the Shire of Dardanup will host the Perth Wildcats at the Eaton Recreation Centre where they will play an intraclub match.
Thrilled to be heading to Eaton for the club’s first pre-season game, Perth Wildcats head of operations Sam Fotu said going to regional communities was an important part of the club.
“The Shire of Dardanup has been a key driver in bringing this event to the region and we’re incredibly grateful for their support in helping us connect with basketball fans across the South West,” he said.
“The intraclub match (Red vs Black) will give fans the chance to see our full squad in action, including our new recruits, and we’re looking forward to sharing that experience with the local community.”
Following the Friday night clash, young fans will be given the opportunity to learn from the elite club on Saturday through two junior basketball clinics, a 10am session and an 11am session, at the centre.
Eaton Basketball Association vice-president Dan Gunson said events such as the intraclub game not only showcased high-level sport, but helped grow games at a grassroot level by inspiring the next generation of players.
“For local children to watch elite athletes compete and then have the opportunity to play on the same court afterwards is a special experience,” he said.
“Bringing high-performance sport to regional communities is incredibly important and we’re delighted to help make that possible.”
Dardanup shire president Tyrell Gardiner said the partnership between the shire, Perth Wildcats, South West Slammers and the EBA strengthened pathways for young athletes in the community, while providing opportunities to experience elite basketball close to home.
He said the shire was honoured to welcome the NBL team to the centre, showcasing its first-class facility.
“About 280,000 people visit Eaton Recreation Centre each year, making it one of the shire’s most valued community assets,” he said.
“This event is not only a fantastic opportunity for basketball fans to see elite athletes in action, but also for young players to be inspired and develop their skills through direct engagement with some of the country’s best basketball talent.”
Tickets for the match will be on sale from 12pm on Friday and can be bought through the Shire of Dardanup and Eaton Recreation Centre websites.
