“It is possible the decomposing carcass will continue to act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast,” a statement said.

“While it’s not uncommon for sharks to be present off the Western Australian coast throughout the year, people should exercise additional caution in the Peppermint Grove Beach area.”

Fisheries officers, the Shire of Capel and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions are monitoring the situation and are providing advice to relevant authorities.

The Shire of Capel has closed the Peppermint Grove beach, which will remain in place until a further assessment of the situation can be made by authorities.
