Those living in the Perth foothills and Darling Scarp region have been told to brace for damaging winds, which are set to roll through this evening and into the morning.

A severe weather warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, which has forecasted gusts of up to 90 km/h.

“A trough moving south over the central South West Land Division combined with a ridge of high pressure in the Bight will cause gusty conditions over the Darling Scarp and the foothills tonight,” it said.

The strong winds are expected to be powerful enough to cause damage to homes and property, with locations affected including Dwellingup, Kalamunda, Mundaring and Donnybrook.

Winds will be strongest across a 12-hour period starting 8pm.

“This weather is not typical for this time of the year and winds may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous,” the bureau warned.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advised people shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.

Motorists should be watch for hazards on the roads including fallen power lines and loose debris.

Meanwhile a possible early thunderstorm has been forecast for Perth tomorrow morning.

Winds will be east to north-easterly shifting west to north-westerly in the middle of the day then becoming light in the late evening, the bureau said.

Showers are expected across the weekend and into the start of next week.
