Police say the boy was stabbed multiple times.

The injured teenager was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital with critical injuries, police said.

Police were told a group of about 100 people were in attendance at the beach when a fight broke out.

Officers from Coffs-Clarence Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police believe the victim was attacked while trying to protect a teenage girl who had been involved in a separate fight.

They said the stabbed teen’s condition had improved.
