William Gary Raymond Robinson: Man denied bail after shouting, swearing and demanding to self-represent

A man who shouted and swore at a magistrate during his court hearing and demanded to represent himself has been refused bail. William Gary Raymond Robinson, 41, yelled at his lawyer to stand down at Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Thursday and launched his own bail application — but did not provide any defence for himself other than repeating “I want bail”. Mr Robinson appeared via video link from Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison facing eight charges including stealing, criminal damage and common assault. His lawyer Leneva Polmear withdrew at Mr Robinson’s request and Magistrate William Yoo allowed him to apply for bail himself. Prosecuting Sen. Sgt Kate McDowell alleged Mr Robinson used a metal rod to strike a car full of his family members and people he knew, shattering the rear window and denting the boot. Mr Robinson allegedly verbally abused staff at Lionel Street IGA before leaving the store with nearly $50 worth of unpaid items. Police arrested him outside the IGA and found him in possession of 0.3g of methamphetamine. Mr Robinson was also charged with criminal damage after allegedly throwing and breaking a chair at a Hay Street complex in Perth. Sen. Sgt McDowell also alleged that Mr Robinson found a lost wallet at the Oasis Playing Fields, put it in his backpack and made no attempt to report it. Police discovered the wallet on him and he allegedly said “finders keepers, I’d say”. Mr Robinson was also charged with common assault after allegedly taking his brother’s phone and hitting him when he asked for it back. Sen. Sgt McDowell opposed bail and said Mr Robinson had demonstrated repeated unprovoked and violent offending against his family members. She said he took advantage of and showed disregard to members of the public. A community corrections officer told the court Mr Robinson had been issued two consecutive community-based orders and had disengaged with both. Mr Yoo asked to hear Mr Robinson’s argument for bail, but he responded, “what kind of question is that?” He did not provide any defence for himself other than repeating “I want bail”.
